The Unofficial weblog.lol Webring

Welcome to the information page for the Unofficial weblog.lol Webring!

What is this?

This is a webring dedicated to gathering and promoting cool websites powered by weblog.lol!

According to Wikipedia:

A webring (or web ring) is a collection of websites linked together in a circular structure, and usually organized around a specific theme, often educational or social.

For a history of webrings, you can check out this write-up!

On the other hand, weblog.lol is a weblogging service, part of the omg.lol suite of online services by Adam Newbold.

How can I be a member of this webring?

Your website must:

  1. Use weblog.lol to host content. (You may use third-party tools to publish and manage your content.)
  2. Display the webring links in a prominent and intuitive location at all times. (Ideally, they should be in the sidebar or the footer of the front page or landing page of your website; you may also place them on a dedicated page, but if you do so, kindly include the URL of the page in your application.)

I reserve the right to remove any websites that don't follow these rules from our directory without prior warning.

First, please place the below links on the chosen location on your website:

<a href="https://webri.ng/webring/webloglol">The Unofficial weblog.lol Webring</a>

<a href="https://webri.ng/webring/webloglol/random?via=YOUR_WEBSITE_URL">Random Site</a>

Please replace YOUR_WEBSITE_URL with, well, your website's URL.

Optionally, you may add the below links:

<a href="https://webri.ng/webring/webloglol/previous?via=YOUR_WEBSITE_URL">Previous Site</a>

<a href="https://webri.ng/webring/webloglol/next?via=YOUR_WEBSITE_URL">Next Site</a>

Second, at this point, you have two options on how to apply for the webring.

SourceTube

If you use SourceTube, you may visit the webring's public issue tracker and open an issue there! Please choose the Join Webring issue template and fill out the requested information.

Email

If you don't use SourceTube, you may send an email to webrings@darylsun.page with the subject line Request to Join the Unofficial weblog.lol Webring, and the below template in the body:

Website Name:

Website URL:

Webring Page URL:

If the webring links are not on a dedicated page on your website, please write N/A.

Lastly, please give me some time to respond to your application. It may take anytime from a few hours to a week, depending on my availability. I will first review your website to see if it complies with the rules, then if everything checks out, you will added to our directory!

How can I leave this webring?

I'm sad to see you go! Alas, nothing lasts forever.

Like before, you have two options on how to request to leave the webring.

SourceTube

You may visit the webring's public issue tracker on SourceTube again and open an issue there! Please choose the Leave Webring issue template and fill out the requested information.

Email

Alternatively, please send another email to webrings@darylsun.page with the subject line Request to Leave the Unofficial weblog.lol Webring, and the below template in the body:

Website Name:

Website URL:

Webring Page URL:

Again, if the webring links are not on a dedicated page on your website, please write N/A.

Once I see your email, I will comply with your request as soon as I can.

Which websites are included in this webring?

How is the webring managed?

Currently, the webring itself is powered by webri.ng.

Why and how did you start this webring?

For a long time, I've been looking for a blogging engine that accomodated my preferred blogging workflow smoothly. Hence, I was pleasantly surprised when I signed up to omg.lol in March 2023 and discovered that weblog.lol fit my needs. I wondered if other people were also using weblog.lol for active blogging, and offered some suggestions regarding blog discovery on the omg.lol Discourse forum.

Then one day, while browsing through the Indieseek.xyz blog, I found this post about webri.ng. I was again pleasantly surprised to find an active webring service, and realized that with this, I could be the change I wanted to see in the world (or at least, on the Internet).

In the omg.lol chat server, I asked Adam for permission to run a webring focused on weblog.lol-powered websites. He said yes! So with a quick sign-up, a page set-up, and a Mastodon toot later, the unofficial weblog.lol Webring was launched.

What happened to the old issue tracker?

omg.lol now has its own code forge, based on Forgejo, called SourceTube. I decided to switch to it from sourcehut because I wanted to focus on using omg.lol's tools and, well, also save money.

What's in the future for this webring?

First, I hope to self-host the code for this webring in the future. There's nothing wrong with webri.ng, but like with any other public online service, it can go down. Also, self-hosting the code will allow me to easily transfer it to someone trustworthy in the future, in case I'm no longer capable of maintaining this webring. There are plenty of resources for hosting webrings... but I just haven't found the time to test them yet.

Second, I hope to move this page (yes, this exact same page that you're reading) to its own domain. My reasoning for this is the same as the previous paragraph.

Third, I hope that this webring gains more members! I admit, I haven't been doing a great job at promoting this webring. However, I don't want to force anyone to use weblog.lol if it doesn't suit them.

Finally, I hope to be able to run this webring for a long time. The omg.lol community has been very sweet and wonderful, and I think weblog.lol has plenty of potential.
